With the Fourth of July holiday quickly approaching the Lincoln Fire Department would like to remind
everyone of some ways to ensure the holiday can be celebrated as safely as possible. First, there are
some firework laws that everyone needs to be aware of. We also have some firework safety tips we
would like to share with you. We're just trying to make sure everyone has an enjoyable and safe Fourth
of July.
First, the Lincoln Fire Department wants to remind everyone that only novelty fireworks are legal for
public use in the City of Lincoln. Examples of novelty fireworks are snake or glow worm pellets, smoke
devices, party poppers, snappers, and sparklers. The possession of any consumer fireworks is prohibited
in the City of Lincoln. Specifically prohibited fireworks include but are not limited to handheld fireworks,
firecrackers, torpedoes, skyrockets, roman candles, and buzz bombs. If you are found in possession of
or igniting any prohibited fireworks the Lincoln Police Department will confiscate them and may issue
you a citation.
We also have some safety tips that we recommend if you plan on using any of the novelty fireworks
during your holiday celebration:
• Always read and follow label directions
• Always have an adult present
• Only ignite fireworks outdoors
• Be sure to have water handy
• Never experiment or attempt to make your own fireworks
• Light only one at a time
• Never re-ignite malfunctioning fireworks
• Never give fireworks to small children
• Store fireworks in a cool, dry place
• Never throw fireworks at another person
• Never carry fireworks in your pocket
Remember even sparklers that appear to be harmless can cause a severe burn. So please enjoy
fireworks carefully, and always supervise children if you are allowing them to use fireworks. Misuse of
fireworks, legal or illegal, is not only dangerous for the people lighting them, but may also injure
bystanders or damage nearby property. If you see someone using illegal fireworks please report them
to the Police or Fire Department. Remember the best way to ensure a safe Fourth of July is to leave the
firework displays to the professionals. We encourage everyone to come out to the Lincoln Rec. Center
on Sunday July 4th to watch the firework display there that will begin shortly after dusk.
